What it is
The Fabric Waste Optimizer is a zero‑cost, tailor‑specific calculator that tells you exactly how much fabric will remain after cutting your design pieces from a roll of material. It expands each pattern’s dimensions by a user‑defined seam allowance on all four sides before computing area, ensuring the result reflects real cutting practices rather than idealized shapes. By comparing this total to the stock area derived from the roll’s width and length, it provides both the leftover surface in square metres and the corresponding linear length along the roll that will be wasted or can be repurposed. This precise waste estimation helps dressmakers and hobbyists plan purchases, reduce costly scrap, and make more sustainable garment construction choices.
How to use it
Enter the fabric roll width in millimeters, the total length you intend to cut from it in metres, and your desired seam allowance in millimetres. For each of the two pattern types you wish to cut, specify how many copies will be produced and give their un‑seam widths and lengths in millimetres. Click calculate to see a waste area (m²) and an unused roll length (m). These figures let you know if you need to buy more fabric or can repurpose leftover material.
Worked example
You start with a 1200 mm wide roll that is 10 m long, so the total stock area equals 1.200 m × 10 m = 12 m². The seam allowance is 5 mm; each pattern’s dimensions become width + 2×5 mm and length + 2×5 mm.
Pattern #1: adjusted width = 200 mm + 10 mm = 210 mm → 0.21 m; adjusted length = 400 mm + 10 mm = 410 mm → 0.41 m. Area per piece = 0.21 m × 0.41 m = 0.0861 m². Four copies use 4 × 0.0861 = 0.3444 m².
Pattern #2: adjusted width = 250 mm + 10 mm = 260 mm → 0.26 m; adjusted length = 350 mm + 10 mm = 360 mm → 0.36 m. Area per piece = 0.26 × 0.36 = 0.0936 m². Two copies use 2 × 0.0936 = 0.1872 m².
Total area used = 0.3444 + 0.1872 = 0.5316 m². Subtracting this from the stock area gives a residual of 12 – 0.5316 = 11.4684 m², which rounds to 11.468 m² in the waste output.
The remaining length along the roll is this area divided by the roll width (1.200 m), yielding 11.4684 / 1.2 = 9.55696 m, rounded to 9.557 m displayed as the unused‑length output.

Frequently asked questions
Does the calculator handle pattern nesting or multiple seam allowances per piece?
No, it assumes every piece is cut independently and a single global seam allowance applied to all sides of each pattern type. Advanced nesting or edge‑specific allowances aren’t supported at this stage.
Can I use more than two pattern types?
The current version supports exactly two pattern sets for clarity. Future iterations may allow an arbitrary list via a dataset input, but that would complicate the UI beyond the scope of this simple deterministic tool.
