Print Time & Cost Projection Calculator

The calculator approximates printing time and the amount of filament needed by converting the 3‑D model’s volume into an extrusion rate based on nozzle size, layer height and print speed. Volume is first expressed in cubic millimetres; the volumetric feed (mm³/s) is nozzle × layer‑height × speed. The division gives time in seconds, which we convert to hours or minutes. Filament length is derived by dividing the object's volume by the filament’s cross‑sectional area (π·(diameter/2)²). A user‑defined waste factor inflates this number to compensate for retractions and first‑layer spread. Finally the mass—and therefore cost—is computed from the density of the material, converting to kilograms before multiplying by the price per kilogram.

Total printable volume of the object as reported by your slicer (includes infill, walls, etc.).
Physical diameter of the filament spool you intend to use.
Diameter of your printer's extruder nozzle, determines how much material is extruded per layer.
Height of each printed slice in millimeters; affects print speed and resolution.
Overall extrusion feedrate set in your slicer, influences how fast material is laid down.
Percentage of filament assumed to lose on first layer or retracts; 5–10% typical.
Market cost of the filament material you are buying, expressed in dollars per kilogram.
Intrinsic density of the filament; choose based on PLA, PETG, or ABS.

What it is

The Print Time & Cost Projection Calculator is designed to give makers a reliable estimate of how long a 3‑D print will take and how much filament it will consume, expressed in both length and monetary cost. By accepting the model’s volume, printer settings (nozzle diameter, layer height, speed), filament characteristics (diameter, material density) and user‑defined waste factor, the tool computes an approximate volumetric feed rate and converts this into a print duration. It also translates the used volume into a physical length based on cross‑section area, then calculates mass using density before applying the price per kilogram for cost prediction. Accurate time projections help with job quoting and scheduling, while precise filament usage informs buying decisions and waste budgeting, making large or multiple orders economically manageable.

How to use it

Enter the total printable volume of your model in cubic centimeters as reported by your slicer. Select the filament diameter and material density that match what you will load into your printer. Provide your nozzle size, desired layer height, and the feedrate speed set in your slicing profile. Specify the estimated waste percentage to cover first‑layer spread or retractions, and put the current price per kilogram of filament. Click calculate to receive an hourly/ minute estimate, how many meters of filament are required (including waste), and the expected cost in dollars.

Worked example

For a small 10 cm³ PLA print we start by converting the volume into cubic millimetres: 10 × 1000 = 10,000 mm³. The extrusion volumetric rate is nozzle diameter (0.4 mm) × layer height (0.2 mm) × print speed (50 mm/s) = 4 mm³/s. Dividing gives a printing time of 2,500 seconds, or 41.667 minutes and about 0.694 hours.

Filament cross‑section area is π·(diameter/2)². With a 1.75 mm filament, the radius in centimeters is (1.75 / 10)/2 = 0.0875 cm; squaring and multiplying by π yields an area of roughly 0.024061 cm². Dividing volume by this gives a raw length of 415.4 cm. Accounting for a typical 5 % waste inflates the length to 436 cm, or 4.360 m.

Mass is volume times density: 10 cm³ × 1.24 g/cm³ = 12.4 g (0.0124 kg). At $30 per kilogram this amounts to $0.372. These exact figures are what the calculator outputs for the four fields.

Frequently asked questions

I use a filament that is not PLA, PETG, or ABS. How do I input its density?

If your material isn’t listed, simply type its density in grams per cubic centimetre into the “Material density” field instead of using the dropdown. The calculator will then apply that exact value for mass and cost calculations.

My slicer reports model volume including support structures. Will my filament estimate be accurate?

Yes; the tool uses whatever total printable volume you provide, so if supports are part of the sliced build size they'll be counted in the filament usage and duration estimates accordingly.

Why does the print‑time calculation ignore retractions or acceleration?

The approach approximates a steady‑state volumetric feed based on nozzle size, layer height, and feedrate, which is standard for rough time budgeting. For highly detailed work or extreme settings you may need to factor in additional overhead manually.

Can I export the results to a spreadsheet?

All outputs appear as plain numbers; you can copy‑paste them into any text editor or spreadsheet for further processing.
