Worked example

In this example the user has a 400‑m² lawn and would normally water it with 300 mm of depth when no rain occurs. The recent rainfall was 150 mm, so the remaining depth that needs to be applied is 300 mm – 150 mm = 150 mm. To convert this depth into volume we multiply by area: 150 mm × 400 m² = 60,000 litres of water would reach the grass if all water were effective. The sprinkler system is only 80 % efficient, so we divide by the efficiency fraction (0.8): 60,000 L ÷ 0.8 = 75,000.000 litres. Frequently asked questions

Can I use a different unit for area or rainfall?

The tool currently accepts square metres for area and millimetres for rainfall. If your measurements are in acres or inches, convert them first: 1 acre ≈ 4047 m²; 1 inch ≈ 25.4 mm.

What if my irrigation system is more efficient than 100 %?

An efficiency percentage over 100 does not make physical sense; the system cannot return more water than applied. The input is constrained to a maximum of 100 %, and values above that will be capped automatically.

How often should I recalculate after it rains?

Re‑enter the rainfall amount each time rain falls or after your scheduling cycle. If rainfall exceeds your target depth, the tool will show zero volume, indicating no watering is needed for that period.
