Grass Seed Coverage Planner

The total seed required is computed by multiplying the lawn area in square feet by the selected seed rate per 1,000 ft², then adjusting for a user‑specified waste margin and converting pounds to kilograms.

Enter the total lawn area in square feet. Use a metric calculator if measuring in meters, then convert to square feet.
Select the seed rate that matches your chosen grass variety. Each option lists the typical pounds of seed per 1,000 square feet for that type.
Add seed for potential loss or uneven spread. Typical values are 5‑10%. Set to 0 if no extra seed desired.

What it is

The Grass Seed Coverage Planner gives homeowners a precise calculation of how much seed is needed for a specific lawn size and grass type. By taking the actual yard area, selecting a recognized seed rate for the chosen species, and adding an optional waste margin, it outputs the exact weight in pounds and kilograms. This level of precision ensures you purchase no more or less seed than required—avoiding both wasted money on excess seed and under‑sowing that leads to thin, patchy lawns.

How to use it

First enter your lawn area in square feet; if needed, convert other units beforehand. Choose the grass variety from the drop‑down list to automatically apply its typical seeding rate per 1,000 ft². Optionally add a waste percentage (e.g., 5–10%) to account for spread loss or uneven coverage. The tool instantly shows total seed in pounds and kilograms, which you can use to order the correct quantity of bags or a bulk order.

Worked example

In this example the lawn is 500 sq ft and we choose Kentucky Bluegrass, which requires 18 lb of seed per 1,000 sq ft.

1️⃣ Base seed = (area × rate) ÷ 1,000 = (500 × 18) ÷ 1,000 = 9.0 lb.

2️⃣ Add a 5 % waste margin: 9.0 lb × (1 + 0.05) = 9.45 lb.

3️⃣ Convert to kilograms for international units: 9.45 lb × 0.45359237 ≈ 4.286 kg.

Thus you would purchase roughly 9.45 lb (about 4.29 kg) of seed for this yard, factoring a small safety margin.

Inputs

  • Yard area (square feet): 500
  • Seed rate (lb/1000 ft²): 18
  • Waste/Safety margin (%): 5

Result

  • Seed needed (lb): 9.45
  • Seed needed (kg): 4.286

Frequently asked questions

If I measure my lawn in square meters, how do I use the calculator?

Convert metres to feet (1 m = 3.28084 ft), multiply the area in m² by 10.764 to get sq ft, then input that value into Yard area (sq ft). The remaining steps are unchanged.

What if my seed bag weight differs from typical packaging?

You can adjust the waste/safety margin until the calculator's output matches the specific bag size you plan to buy. For example, if a 10‑lb bag suits you but the calculation says 9 lb, set waste‑percent to around 11% (0.11 × base = extra 1 lb).
