How to use it
Enter the length and width of your chosen tile in inches. Then fill in the overall floor or wall dimensions—length in the direction tiles will travel, width across the surface. Select whether the tile is laid normally (plain) or rotated 90 degrees; this choice swaps which side aligns with each axis. Provide a safety margin percentage if you want extra tiles to cover cuts at edges or unexpected pattern shifts. The calculator instantly reports the number of tiles to order, the total floor area in square feet, and how much surface will be wasted as leftover scraps—expressed both in square feet and as a percentage of the whole floor.
Worked example
First compute the tile area: 12 in × 18 in = 216 sq in. The floor occupies 30 in × 48 in = 1,440 sq in (10 sq ft). Raw tiles needed without margin are ceil(1,440 ÷ 216) = 7. Adding a 10 % safety margin yields ceil(7 × 1.10) = 8 tiles to order. Because the orientation is rotated 90°, tile longer side (18 in) runs along the floor’s length and shorter side (12 in) along its width. Full tiles that fit inside the grid: floor(30 ÷ 18) = 1 tile longwise, floor(48 ÷ 12) = 4 tiles wide; fully covered area = (1 × 18) × (4 × 12) = 864 sq in. Waste area equals total floor minus covered area: 1,440 – 864 = 576 sq in, or 576 ÷ 144 = 4.0 sq ft of scrap. Waste percentage is (4 ÷ 10) × 100 = 40 %. The final report shows 8 tiles to order, a floor area of 10 sq ft, 4 sq ft expected waste and a 40 % waste rate.

Frequently asked questions
Can I switch between inches and centimeters?
All inputs are expected in inches. If you prefer to work in centimeters, convert your measurements to inches before entering them into the tool. The calculator does not currently support unit conversion automatically.
What if my floor shape isn’t a perfect rectangle?
The calculator assumes a rectangular area. For irregular shapes, approximate the total area or use multiple runs for distinct sections and sum the results. This will give you a close estimate of material needs and waste.
Why do I need to set a safety margin if waste is already calculated?
Waste calculations account only for scraps from unfit full tiles along the edges. A safety margin ensures additional whole tiles are ordered to cover small cuts, pattern shifts, and any unforeseen layout changes that might increase tile usage beyond the precise geometry estimate.
