Worked example

First, convert the 20 L batch to gallons: 20 ÷ 3.785 ≈ 5.284 gal. Next, compute total gravity points: (1.050 – 1) × 1000 = 50 pts per gallon; multiplied by 5.284 gal gives 264.2 pts needed. A pale malt with PPG 36 yields 36 pts per pound per gallon. Dividing 264.2 pts by 36 PPG results in ≈7.34 lb of grain at 100 % efficiency. Because only 75 % of the potential extract is expected to be captured, divide by 0.75, giving ≈9.78 lb required via the corrected equation. Finally, convert to kilograms: 9.78 lb × 0.453592 = 4.438 kg – which is shown as the Malt mass (kg) and, when multiplied by 2.2046226, the equivalent of about 9.784 lb.

What does OG represent, and why is it important for calculating malt mass?

OG, or original gravity, measures the density of the wort before fermentation, expressed as a specific gravity (e.g., 1.050). It directly reflects the potential alcohol content, flavor intensity and body of the beer. Knowing the target OG lets a brewer determine how much fermentable sugar—and therefore grain—must be added to achieve that profile.

Why do I need to enter both a grain yield and an efficiency percentage?

The grain yield (PPG) tells you how many gravity points one pound of that specific malt produces per gallon at 100 % extraction. The efficiency percentage represents the real‑world mash/fermentation performance for your equipment and technique. Multiplying these together scales the raw potential to what you actually expect, giving accurate malt quantities.

Can this calculator handle mix-grains or specialty additions?
